Gum Disease ProgressionGum disease or periodontal disease is an infection of the gums caused by accumulation of dental plaque on the teeth. Gum disease affects the gum and the supporting structures of teeth, gradually destroying the support of your natural teeth. There are numerous disease entities requiring different treatment approaches. Dental plaque (biofilm) is the primary cause of gum disease in genetically susceptible individuals. Daily brushing and flossing will prevent most periodontal conditions. Gingivitis is an early stage of periodontal disease where the gums may become red, swollen and bleed easily due to inflammation.The early stages of gum disease are painless and therefore easily ignored by many patients. However, if not treated, gingivitis can advance to periodontitis. Periodontitis is a more advanced stage of periodontal disease which ultimately leads to the deterioration of gums, bone and supporting structures of the tooth. Eventually, the tooth becomes loose and falls out or needs to be extracted.
