Plaque is the film that forms on your teeth daily, and is made up almost entirely of bacteria and the acids they form can lead to gum disease and Cavities.
                                                  
What causes Cavities? 
Tooth decay develops when mineral is lost from teeth due to acids produced by bacteria within dental plaque. If allowed to progress white spots or cavities may develop.

What causes Gum disease?
Poor gum health begins with a build up of plaque along the gum line. This can lead to inflammation of the gums known as gingivitis. Over time if left untreated gingivitis can progress into a more advanced gum disease known as periodontitis.more info

How do I protect my Teeth and Gums from cavities and gum disease?   

Effective daily plaque removal with correct brushing and flossing techniques. Our Dentists or Hygienist can recommend the right toothbrush, paste, floss and mouthrince for your individual requirements and give you instructions on correct brushing and flossing techniques.  A balanced diet and avoiding snacking on sweet foods and drinks in between meals will also help prevent cavities. Regular dental visits and hygiene maintenance appointments are also required to professionally clean your teeth and to monitor for any changes to your teeth and gums. This way gum disease or cavities can be caught in there early stages avoiding extensive periodontal or dental treatment.
