Hygiene Services

Our dental hygienists, Cindy and May, aim to prevent dental disease, to help you keep your teeth for life. They are responsible for your scale and polish appointments, and will help you to find the easiest ways to keep your oral hygiene in top shape at home. For more serious gum infections we are also happy to refer to a periodontist.

Good oral hygiene involves brushing and flossing twice a day to keep your teeth and gums healthy. However, brushing and flossing may not be enough. The shape of your teeth may hinder thorough cleaning, causing unsightly tartar buildups that cannot be brushed away.

Cindy and May are both very thorough and gentle. They can even make your hygiene visit completely painless, by numbing your gums, if you like! They are also trained in the latest technology in tooth whitening, to help you get the smile you’ve always dreamed of.

The presence of tartar allows bacteria to be very close to the teeth and gums, which risks tooth decay and gum inflammation. When you come in to have your teeth cleaned with us, we use hand and ultrasonic tools to safely remove such deposits as well as stains, eg, from coffee, while leaving healthy tooth enamel unaffected.

Your First Hygiene Visit

What to expect at your first visit to the hygienist at Bright White Dental:

  • Full periodontal (gum) examination and measurements – Your hygienist will complete a baseline ‘gum map’ so that we can track changes in your gum health during subsequent visits.
  • Tour of your mouth, teeth and gums using an intra-oral camera
  • Cleaning and polishing of teeth and gums to remove plaque, tartar and stains. In some cases, this may require more than one appointment.
  • Education on prevention of dental decay and gum disease, with a demonstration of how to clean hard-to-reach areas at home
  • Recommendations of products that will suit you, such as mouthwashes, toothpaste, floss and toothbrushes.

All new patients will receive a complimentary Oral Hygiene Pack containing information and products for you to use at home.
